Years ago, copy editors worked at large U-shaped tables. The chief editor's desk, in the opening of the "U," was "the slot." Copy went from rim editors to a slot editor for a final read. Rimmers proudly called themselves rimrats.

This raises a VERY interesting question, though. When did most people in the EVT readership area LEARN about the 33? Some thoughts: More and more people get their news from the Internet. Most people, surveys indicate, are on the Internet during work hours, not at home. Fewer people watch TV news broadcasts. Would EVT readers be likely to have heard about the 33 before reading the paper this morning? I'm trying to remember when the 33 was announced. I believe if was around 5 p.m. our time, or at least there were a few reports then. I'm curious: when did the rest of you hear that number? I was more plugged into the story because of Randy working for a Virginia paper and graduating from VaTech, of course, and I also reviewed the coverage that evening with my online media class. So I'm not a good guide...
To me, the murders were the story on Day 1, regardless how many knew about them. I think the hed should have reflected that. This one seems to be a misplaced sub hed.
